3-O-Methyl-D-glucopyranose is a non-metabolizable glucose analog. 3-O-Methyl-D-glucopyranose exerts a protective effect against alloxan-induced damage to rat pancreatic islet β cells. 3-O-Methyl-D-glucopyranose can be used in diabetes research[1].

In Vivo

α-3-O-Methyl-D-glucopyranose (0.28 mmole; intravenous injection; single infusion for 60 sec) significantly reduces blood glucose levels and protects pancreatic islet β cells in male rats with alloxan-induced diabetes[1].

Animal Model: Rats (male, ~200 g, fasted, alloxan-induced diabetes)[1]
Dosage: 0.28 mmole
Administration: i.v.; single infusion over 60 seconds
Result: Reduced mean plasma glucose concentration to 195 mg/100ml 24 hours post-alloxan administration.
Produced a statistically significant lower plasma glucose level compared to the β-anomer.
Resulted in a mean plasma glucose concentration near that of untreated control rats.
