It plays a crucial role in the salvage pathway of purine metabolism in the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium falciparum. pfHPRT catalyzes the conversion of hypoxanthine and guanine to their respective nucleotide forms, in the presence of phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP). This enzymatic activity is essential for the parasite's survival, as it provides a means to generate purine nucleotides required for DNA and RNA synthesis.
