3',4'-Didehydro-3'-deoxycytidine is produced by the viperin enzyme during interferon-mediated antiviral defense, and can be metabolized into ddhCTP to inhibit viral replication.

3',4'-Didehydro-3'-deoxycytidine serves as a host response biomarker. 3',4'-Didehydro-3'-deoxycytidine is detectable in the serum of patients with acute COVID-19, as well as in the urine of malaria-infected mice and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, but it is barely detectable in the serum of healthy controls and shows no correlation with other quantifiable compounds or clinical test indicators.
