DcR1 acts as a receptor for the cytotoxic ligand TRAIL but does not contain the intracellular death domain required to initiate apoptosis. By competing with the functional TRAIL receptors TNFRSF10A and TNFRSF10B for ligand binding, it functions as a decoy receptor that protects cells from TRAIL-induced apoptosis
