Background

Function
KIF4A is an Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster binding motor protein that has a role in chromosome segregation during mitosis. Translocates PRC1 to the plus ends of interdigitating spindle microtubules during the metaphase to anaphase transition, an essential step for the formation of an organized central spindle midzone and midbody and for successful cytokinesis. May play a role in mitotic chromosomal positioning and bipolar spindle stabilization[1][2][3].

Expression
Tissue_specificity:Highly expressed in hematopoietic tissues, fetal liver, spleen, thymus and adult thymus and bone marrow. Lower levels are found in heart, testis, kidney, colon and lung -
Isoforms & Post-Translational Modification
O95239 has 2 isomers: O95239-1: 139881 Da (predicted); O95239-2: 128459 Da (predicted).
-
Subunit
Interacts with the cytosolic iron-sulfur protein assembly (CIA) complex components CIAO2B and MMS19; the interactions facilitate the transfer of Fe-S clusters to KIF4A to ensure proper localization of KIF4A to mitotic machinery components (PubMed:29848660). Interacts (via C-terminus) with unphosphorylated PRC1 (via N-terminus); the interaction is required for the progression of mitosis (PubMed:15297875, PubMed:15625105, PubMed:29848660)
