Eastern equine encephalitis is an infection of the central nervous system caused by Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), an alphavirus in the Togaviridae family of +ssRNA viruses, and transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. EEEV was first isolated in 1933 in Virginia, USA.
