Biological Activity: Orcein is an irreversible stain that specifically targets elastic fibers and can interact hydrophobically with the protein components in elastic fibers. Orcein makes elastic fibers in tissues appear purple or purple-red. Orcein can be used for morphological studies of Drosophila polytene chromosomes and for qualitative and quantitative analysis of elastic fibers, collagen fibers and other components in atherosclerotic plaques[1][2].
