As the core framework of nanodelivery systems, they not only form lipid bilayers or solid matrices through self-assembly to encapsulate lipophilic or hydrophilic drugs, but can also be further subdivided according to formulation requirements into structural lipids (such as phospholipids and triglycerides), functional lipids (such as ionizable cationic lipids used for nucleic acid condensation and endosome escape), and sterically stable lipids (such as PEGylated lipids).
