Thrombomodulin Protein serves as a specific endothelial cell receptor, engaging in a 1:1 stoichiometric complex with thrombin. This complex plays a pivotal role in the conversion of protein C to its activated form, protein Ca. Upon activation, protein Ca functions to cleave the activated cofactors of the coagulation cascade, namely factor Va and factor VIIIa, leading to a reduction in the overall production of thrombin.
