Biological Activity
Polyacrylic acid (Carbomer) is a mucoadhesive polymer frequently used to encapsulate other compounds in order to enhance their mucoadhesion. The primary mechanism of adhesion for anionic polymers involves hydrogen bonding interactions between the polymer and mucin; the interaction between polyacrylic acid and mucin is strongest under acidic pH conditions.
