Function
COPB1 is a cytoplasmic protein complex that binds to dilysine motifs and reversibly binds to Golgi non-clathrin-coated vesicles. These vesicles further mediate the transport of biosynthetic proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum via the Golgi apparatus to the trans-Golgi network. The capsid protein complex is essential for Golgi membrane budding and is crucial for the retrograde transport of dilysine-labeled proteins from the Golgi apparatus to the endoplasmic reticulum. In mammals, capsid proteins can only be recruited by membranes associated with ADP-ribosylation factors (ARFs), a class of small GTP-binding proteins; this complex also affects the structural integrity of the Golgi apparatus, as well as the processing, activity, and endocytic circulation of low-density lipoprotein receptors. COPB1 plays a functional role in promoting the transport of κ-opioid receptor mRNA to axons and enhancing the translation of these proteins. COPB1 is essential for limiting lipid storage in lipid droplets.
