Background

aerA is a secreted cytolytic toxin that forms pores in host membranes following proteolytic removal of a C-terminal propeptide, resulting in disruption of the membrane permeability barrier and host cell death. The pores are composed of transmembrane beta-strands and have a diameter of approximately 3 nm.
