Background

PI4K2B collaborates with PI4K2A and type III PI4Ks (PIK4CA and PIK4CB) to contribute to cellular PI4-kinase activity (by similar: PubMed:11923287, PubMed:12324459). Its role is particularly prominent in plasma membrane, endosomal, and Golgi compartments (by similar: PubMed:11923287, PubMed:12324459). The enzyme phosphorylates phosphatidylinositol (PI) to PI4P, initiating the production of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) – a precursor of the second messenger inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) (by similar: PubMed:11923287, PubMed:12324459). PI4K2B enhances InsP3 generation in stimulated cells and is implicated in vesicular trafficking regulation.
