Background
SLC26A9 is an ion transporter that functions both as an ion channel and an anion exchanger. It primarily acts as a chloride channel, mediating uncoupled chloride transport via an alternate-access mechanism where a saturable binding site is alternately exposed to either side of the membrane. Additionally, it serves as a DIDS- and thiosulfate-sensitive anion exchanger, facilitating the exchange of chloride for bicarbonate ions across the cell membrane.
