Background

SLC38A2 is a symporter that cotransports neutral amino acids and sodium ions from the extracellular to the intracellular side of the cell membrane. The transport is pH-sensitive, Li(+)-intolerant, electrogenic, driven by the Na(+) electrochemical gradient, and involves a 1:1 stoichiometry of neutral amino acids and sodium ions. It may function in amino acid transport at the blood-brain barrier and in supplying maternal nutrients to the fetus through the placenta (by similar). Additionally, SLC38A2 maintains a key glutamine/glutamate metabolic balance, supporting retrograde signaling via dendritic release of the neurotransmitter glutamate (by similar). In differentiating osteoblasts, it transports L-proline for efficient synthesis of proline-enriched proteins and provides proline essential for osteoblast differentiation and bone formation during bone development (by similar).
