Cat. No.: HY-W673672
Handling Instructions Technical Support

4-Oxodecanoic acid (4-Ketocapric acid) is a Sex pheromone component. 4-Oxodecanoic acid can be isolated from the sternal glands on the sixth abdominal segment of unmated female Vespa velutina. When mixed with 4-oxooctanoic acid at the natural secretion ratio of 0.78 in female wasps, 4-Oxodecanoic acid exhibits an attractive effect on male Vespa velutina. 4-Oxodecanoic acid can be used in population monitoring and control research on the invasive species Vespa velutina.

Description

4-Oxodecanoic acid (4-Ketocapric acid) is a Sex pheromone component. 4-Oxodecanoic acid can be isolated from the sternal glands on the sixth abdominal segment of unmated female Vespa velutina. When mixed with 4-oxooctanoic acid at the natural secretion ratio of 0.78 in female wasps, 4-Oxodecanoic acid exhibits an attractive effect on male Vespa velutina. 4-Oxodecanoic acid can be used in population monitoring and control research on the invasive species Vespa velutina[1][2].

In Vivo

4-Oxodecanoic acid (10 ng-11.3 μg) triggers dose-dependent electrophysiological responses in male *Vespa velutina* at a dose of 10 ng; when mixed with 4-OOA at the natural ratio of female wasps (0.77 4-OOA/4-ODA), it acts as a highly efficient attractant for male wasps, with an attractiveness comparable to that of live virgin female wasps[1].
The mixture of 4-Oxodecanoic acid (10 mg per trap; applied to filter paper), 4-OOA and 5-ODA at a ratio of 2:4:1 (4-OOA:4-ODA:5-ODA) exhibits extremely strong attractiveness to native male Vespa velutina nigrithorax in China[2].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: adult males[1]
Dosage: 11.3 μg (blend with 8.7 μg 4-OOA); 10 ng, 100 ng, 1000 ng, 10,000 ng, 100,000 ng (antennal electrophysiology tests)
Administration: delivered via filter paper attached to visual models, single application (blend); delivered via filter paper in odour-delivery pipettes, single puff exposure (antennal electrophysiology tests)
Result: Exhibited dose-dependent electrophysiological responses to 4-ODA, with a significant response (vs. solvent control) observed at doses as low as 10 ng.
Attracted significantly more males than solvent controls when used in a natural gyne-derived ratio (11.3 μg 4-ODA + 8.7 μg 4-OOA, 0.77 ratio), with a number of landings not significantly different from those elicited by live virgin gynes.
Failed to attract significantly more males than controls when tested in ratios other than the natural gyne-derived ratio.
Animal Model: yellow-legged hornet, native Chinese subspecies[2]
Dosage: 10 mg per trap (in a 2:4:1 ratio with 4-OOA and 5-ODA)
Administration: applied to filter paper
Result: Attracted a mean of 93 males per day at Baiyunshan Park and 106 males per day at Longling Natural Reserve (ANOVA: F_(2,10) = 16.32, P < 0.001).
Attracted no males to solvent-only control traps.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
