Background

Function
Myelin Protein Zero cell surface receptor, which is involved in signal transduction processes. Recruits PTPN11/SHP-2 to the cell membrane and is a putative substrate of PTPN11/SHP-2. Is a major receptor for concanavalin-A (ConA) and is involved in cellular signaling induced by ConA, which probably includes Src family tyrosine-protein kinases. Isoform 3 seems to have a dominant negative role; it blocks tyrosine phosphorylation of MPZL1 induced by ConA. Isoform 1, but not isoform 2 and isoform 3, may be involved in regulation of integrin-mediated cell motility

Subcellular Localization
Membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein

Expression
Tissue_specificity:This gene is widely expressed in the heart, placenta, kidneys, and pancreas, with the highest expression levels found in these regions. Isomer 3 is relatively abundant in hematopoietic tissues and the fetal liver. Isomers 1 and 3 are expressed in CD14-peripheral blood monocytes and pre-B cell progenitor cells. Isomer 3 appears to be the dominant isomer in CD34-promyelocytes and early monocytes. During monocyte differentiation, the expression level of isomer 3 decreases, while the expression level of isomer 1 increases. Isomer 1 is abundant in stromal cells and less abundant in umbilical vein endothelial cells and erythroid progenitor cells. Isomer 2 is expressed in erythroid progenitor cell lines. -
