Background

  • Function

Periostin induces cell attachment and spreading and plays a role in cell adhesion. Enhances incorporation of BMP1 in the fibronectin matrix of connective tissues, and subsequent proteolytic activation of lysyl oxidase LOX[1].

  • Subcellular Localization

Golgi apparatus; Secreted; Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix

  • Expression

Tissue_specificity:It is widely expressed, with the highest expression levels in the aorta, stomach, lower digestive tract, placenta, uterus, thyroid tissue, and breast. It is also expressed in the kidneys (PubMed: 21763681) and lungs (PubMed: 22079858) . Its expression is upregulated in ovarian epithelial tumors. It is not expressed in normal ovaries. It is also highly expressed around the tumor in lung cancer tissue, but not within the tumor itself. It is overexpressed in breast cancer.

Gamma-carboxylation is controversial. Gamma-carboxyglutamated; gamma-carboxyglutamate residues are formed by vitamin K dependent carboxylation; this may be required for calcium binding (PubMed:18450759). According to a more recent report, does not contain vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxyglutamate residues (PubMed:26273833)

  • Subunit

Homodimer (PubMed:29754429). Interacts with BMP1 and fibronectin
