Background
MDR1 is a membrane transporter primarily responsible for translocating drugs and phospholipids from the cytoplasmic to the exoplasmic leaflet of the apical membrane (by similar). It mainly facilitates the flop of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, beta-D-glucosylceramides, and sphingomyelins. Additionally, MDR1 functions as an energy-dependent efflux pump, contributing to reduced drug accumulation in multidrug-resistant cells.
