Background

Function
Gelsolin is a Ca2+-dependent actin-binding protein that plays a crucial role in processes such as cytoskeleton remodeling and cell migration. Under the regulation of calcium ions, Gelsolin can sever and cap actin filaments, regulate the assembly and disassembly of actin filaments, and remodel the cytoskeleton. Gelsolin is also involved in cell movement, affecting the migration of fibroblasts and the phagocytosis of immune cells, and can regulate the growth cones and filopodia of neurons. In addition, as a downstream effector molecule of Rac, Gelsolin can be dissociated upon activation by Rac, promoting actin remodeling and influencing cellular physiological activities. Mutant mice lacking Gelsolin and clinical studies have shown that Gelsolin is associated with a number of conditions such as inflammation, cancer, and amyloidosis[1].
