Dextran sulfate sodium salt with different molecular weights exhibits different biological activities. Biological Activity
Antibacterial activity:
Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) (MW 500000) nanoparticles can be formulated with gelation technique. The formulated DSS nanoparticles (MIC: 150-250 μg/mL) exhibits a spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli, S. pyogenes, B. subtilis, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and P. vulgaris[1].
Antiviral activity:
Dextran sulfate sodium (MW 500000) inhibits replication of HIV-1 in MT-4 cells (IC50: 10.9 μg/mL)[5].
Dextran sulfate sodium (MW 500000) (30 μg/mL) inhibits replication of HIV-1 in MT-4 cells[6].
Functional material preparation:
Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) (MW 500000) can be incorporated into self-assembling PEI-DNA complexes (a non-viral gene delivery polymer) to reduce cytotoxicity[3].
Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) (MW 500000) has haemocompatible property and interacts with blood components. DSS can covalent binds onto cellulose membrane for studying platelet adhesion ability of the modified membranes[4].
Others:
Dextran sulfate sodium (MW 450000-550000) (3% w/v) can be used for the isolation of neutrophils from human and rat blood[2].
