Nitrocefin is a highly activated, chromogenic cephalosporin derivative. Nitrocefin is a chromogenic β-lactamase substrate. Nitrocefin undergoes a distinctive color change from yellow to red as the amide bond in the β-lactam ring is hydrolyzed by β-lactamase. Nitrocefin is used in competitive inhibition studies in developmental work on β-lactamase-resistant antibiotics .

Desfuroylceftiofur is an antibacterial agent and the active metabolite of Ceftiofur sodium (HY-B0898) with an intact β-lactam ring. Desfuroylceftiofur exhibits inhibitory activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria of veterinary interest in vitro. Desfuroylceftiofur can be used in the research of bovine respiratory disease, porcine respiratory disease, equine lymphadenitis, bovine mastitis, turkey colibacillosis, suppurative arthritis and respiratory infections .

CMX410 is an orally active and selective Mycobacterium tuberculosis Pks13 acyltransferase domain inhibitor and anti-bacterial agent. CMX410 reacts with the catalytic serine of the Pks13-AT domain to form a stable β-lactam ring, disables the enzyme’s active site, reduces trehalose monomycolate and trehalose dimycolate levels, triggers cell lysis, and reduces intracellular bacterial burden. CMX410 can be used for the research of tuberculosis .

Isosulfazecin (iSZ) is a novel β-lactam antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas acidophilus sp., synthesized in a nutrient solution supplemented with glycerol and sodium thiosulfate under aerobic conditions in parallel with bacterial growth. It is purified by chromatography and crystallization from aqueous methanol. Physicochemical analysis determined its molecular formula to be C12H20N4O9S, showing a structure with a β-lactam ring, methoxyl and sulfonate groups. Acid hydrolysis yields L-alanine and D-glutamic acid. iSZ is a diastereomer of sulfadiazine and exhibits moderate activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, but potent activity against bacteria resistant to β-lactam antibiotics .
