Lambda-carrageenase is a marine endo-glycosidase from Pseudoalteromonas sp. specific for lambda-carrageenan, which endohydrolyses (1->4)-beta-linkages in the lambda-carrageenan backbone to yield the tetrasaccharide alpha-D-Gal-p2,6S2-(1->3)-beta-D-Gal-p2S-(1->4)-alpha-D-Gal-p2,6S2-(1->3)-D-Gal-p2-S; iota-carrageenan (EC 3.2.1.157), kappa-carrageenan (EC 3.2.1.83), agarose and porphyran are not substrates. By cleaving the highly sulfated lambda-carrageenan it supports marine bacteria utilisation of red-algal sulfated galactans. It is distributed across Bacteria and Eukaryota.
