Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) depolymerase is the biodegradable-plastic-degrading enzyme. It hydrolyzes the PHB polyester with water, releasing shorter oligomers (x=1-5) of (R)-3-hydroxybutanoate; it acts on native (intracellular amorphous) and denatured (extracellular crystalline) granules and other C1-C5 short-chain hydroxyalkanoate polyesters. Expected in Bacteria and Eukaryota.
