Complement factor D (adipsin) is the alternative-pathway serine protease in family S1, analogous to C1s cleavage of C2, which selectively cleaves the Arg-Lys bond in factor B when B is in complex with C3b or cobra-venom factor, forming the alternative-pathway C3 convertase C3bBb. By activating factor B it drives alternative-pathway complement activation. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
