Complement factor I is a regulatory serine protease in family S1 that inactivates complement subcomponents C3b, iC3b and C4b by proteolytic cleavage; cleavage of C3b requires binding to cofactor factor H or complement receptor CR1, cleavage of iC3b requires CR1, and cleavage of C4b requires C4b-binding protein. By damping complement activation it prevents host-tissue injury. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
