Pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) composed of four fused benzene rings. It has a distinct aromatic odor, produced by incomplete combustion of organic matter. Pyrene exhibits strong fluorescence, emitting in the blue region of the spectrum, making it useful as a probe for studying molecular interactions in solution and on surfaces. Pyrene is also used as a model compound for the study of PAHs in various environments and biological systems because of its ubiquity in these environments. However, long-term exposure to pyrene has been associated with potential health risks, including carcinogenicity and mutagenicity.

8-Phenyl-BODIPY 505/515 is a molecular rotor based on the BODIPY scaffold, specifically used as a microviscosity probe. The working principle of 8-Phenyl-BODIPY 505/515 is based on the restriction of molecular motion by viscosity: in a high-viscosity environment, the rotational freedom of its chemical bonds is inhibited, which leads to a significant extension of fluorescence lifetime. This property makes 8-Phenyl-BODIPY 505/515 an effective tool for monitoring changes in the viscosity of intracellular microenvironments via fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) technology .

1-Pyrenebutyric acid is a pyrene-based fluorescent probe compound. The fluorescence lifetime of 1-Pyrenebutyric acid is quenched by molecular oxygen and intracellular ROS, thus it serves as a fluorescent probe for detecting ROS and oxygen concentration through fluorescence lifetime measurements. 1-Pyrenebutyric acid undergoes electrostatic interactions with arginine-rich peptides, increasing their net hydrophobicity, promoting their direct translocation across lipid bilayers, and enhancing cytosolic delivery. 1-Pyrenebutyric acid is used for intracellular reactive oxygen species detection and research related to arginine-rich peptide-mediated cytosolic delivery .

BV-1 is a fluorescent probe for viscosity detection and imaging in living cells. BV-1 can be used to detect changes in intracellular viscosity and mitochondrial viscosity in living cells. BV-1 responds to environmental viscosity via a molecular rotor mechanism. In a low-viscosity environment, the centrally located unsaturated structure induces a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state and promotes non-radiative transitions, resulting in fluorescence quenching; when viscosity increases, molecular rotation is restricted, the TICT state is attenuated, and fluorescence is enhanced with a red shift. BV-1 can be used for real-time monitoring of changes in cytoplasmic viscosity and the viscosity increase during cell apoptosis. Ex/Em = 480/570 nm .

HPsensor 2 is a fluorescent probe used to detect the surface hydrophobicity of proteins. The detection mechanism of HPsensor 2 relies on its amphipathic properties. The 2-methoxyethylamine substituents at positions 3 and 5 of its BODIPY core enhance water solubility, enabling it to interact with solvent-exposed hydrophobic regions on proteins. When it binds to these hydrophobic surfaces, the free rotation of the meso-aryl substituent is restricted, increasing molecular rigidity and reducing non-radiative deactivation, which results in a significant enhancement of fluorescence. HPsensor 2 exhibits weak but detectable fluorescence in aqueous environments, and its fluorescence is highly sensitive to changes in protein surface hydrophobicity (Ex/Em = 528/579 nm) .
