Background

Interleukin-18 is an interferon (IFN-γ) inducer and a member of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) cytokine family. IL-1 cytokines and their receptors are involved in inflammation, fever, and immune stimulation. IL-18 binding protein is an inhibitor of IL-18, which binds to IL-18 and prevents IL-18 from binding to its receptor, thereby inhibiting IL-18-induced IFN-γ production. IL-18 binding protein is constitutively expressed and secreted in monocytes. IFN-γ can enhance the expression of this protein[1][2].
