Chagas disease

Definition:

Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is caused by infection with protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The infection is transmitted by hematophagous reduviid insect vectors through fecal contamination. The majority of infected individuals live in Latin American countries. Chagas disease is characterized by an acute phase followed by a chronic phase, with sustained inflammation that causes cardiomyopathy, digestive disorders, and neuropathies.
