Definition:

Neisseria meningitidis is a gram-negative bacterial pathogen that specifically infects humans. It is a frequent asymptomatic colonizer of the human upper respiratory tract, and most adults are resistant to infection through acquired immunity. In susceptible individuals, it causes meningococcal meningitis and severe septicemia.
