Spike protein
Definition:
Spike protein is the spike (S) protein of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS CoV-2), which plays a key role in the receptor recognition and cell membrane fusion process. Spike protein is composed of two subunits, S1 and S2. S1 recognizes and binds to the host receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), while S2 mediates viral cell membrane fusion.
