Sporotrichosis is an endemic mycosis in tropical and subtropical areas caused by Sporothrix schenckii which is a common saprophyte of soil, decaying wood, hay and sphagnum moss. S. schenckii usually causes a mixed suppurative and granulomatous inflammatory reaction in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, frequently accompanied by microabscess and fibrosis.
