Phytuberol
Phytuberol is an antibacterial agent and unsaturated sesquiterpene alcohol. As a phytoalexin, phytuberol participates in plant defense responses by inhibiting the growth of pathogenic fungi (e.g., Phytophthora infestans, Helminthosporium spp.). Its accumulation increases significantly in potato tuber slices treated with Ethephon (HY-W131845) and fungal elicitors, and correlates with tissue browning and disease resistance responses. Hytuberol can be used in studies related to bacterial wilt, tobacco wildfire disease, potato late blight, and potato-fungus interactions.

Biological Activity
Phytuberol (2 mL l-1 10% (w/v) Rhizoctonia bataticola fungal elicitor + 100 mg l-1 β-cyclodextrin; 48 h) production is induced in Solanum tuberosum hairy root cultures, with peak production of ~40 μg g-1 dry wt achieved under these conditions[1].
Phytuberol (2 days after inoculation) accumulation is induced by inoculation with Pseudomonas solanacearum U-7 in Burley 21 and Mito 3 tobacco callus (3.83 μg/g dry wt and 1.15 μg/g dry wt, respectively), but not in Bright Yellow 4 or Coker 319 tobacco callus[2].
Phytuberol (4 days after inoculation; 3-6 weeks post-transplant growth period) accumulation induced by Pseudomonas solanacearum U-7 in Burley 21 tobacco callus is stable at ~1.6-1.8 μg/g dry wt in 3-5-week-old tissues, but drops to a trace level in 6-week-old tissues[2].
Phytuberol (0 to 4 days after inoculation) accumulation in Burley 21 tobacco callus inoculated with Pseudomonas solanacearum U-7 increases over time, reaching its maximum 4 days after inoculation[2].
Phytuberol (4 days after inoculation) accumulation in Burley 21 tobacco callus is induced to high levels (6.7-6.8 μg/g dry wt) by inoculation with Pseudomonas solanacearum strains (M23R and U-7), while inoculation with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci strains (6602 and 7246) induces low phytuberol accumulation (0.24-0.41 μg/g dry wt)[2].
Phytuberol (36-84 h) accumulates to increasing levels in Ethrel-treated Kennebec potato tuber slices inoculated with incompatible race 4 of Phytophthora infestans, reaching 37 μg/g fresh weight after 84 hours of incubation[3].

Phytuberol accumulates in Ethrel-treated Kennebec potato tuber slices treated with autoclaved cell-free sonicates of Phytophthora infestans race 4 at 14°C, 19°C, and 25°C, with maximum accumulation (31 μg/g fresh weight) occurring at 19°C; no phytuberol is detected at 30°C or 36°C[3].
Phytuberol (100 μliters/liter; 72 h) accumulates to 52 μg/g fresh weight in Kennebec potato tuber slices treated with autoclaved cell-free sonicates of Phytophthora infestans race 4 and exposed to 100 μliters/liter ethylene after 72 hours of incubation[3].
