Background

Bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4) is a member of the BMP-family, a group of growth factors, initially discovered for their ability to initiate bone formation when transplanted to ectopic sites. Bone morphogenetic protein-4 is part of the transforming growth factor (TGF-β) superfamily and is widely expressed from early embryogenesis through adulthood. Bone morphogenetic protein-4 also plays a key role in mesenchyme formation and the development of multiple organs. In addition, BMP-4 also functions as a differentiation factor to hematopoietic and nerve cells and promotes epidermal commitment. Mature BMP-4 is a homodimeric glycoprotein with a cystine knot[1].
