Polyquaternium-51
Polyquaternium-51 is a hydrophilic polymeric zwitterion with counter ions, and an artificial cell membrane-mimicking material with high biocompatibility. Polyquaternium-51 functions as a penetration inhibitor and exfoliation efficacy reducer. Polyquaternium-51 can be used as cosmetic moisturizing ingredient, and can be used as coating biological scaffolds.

Biological Activity
Polyquaternium-51 (4 wt% L-carnitine at a 1:1 molar ratio; 24 h) shows reduced percutaneous penetration into porcine skin SC (2.38% of applied product) and other epidermal layers (4.17% of applied product)[2].
Polyquaternium-51 reduces percutaneous penetration of L-carnitine into epidermal layers and reduces L-carnitine exfoliation efficacy in ion-pair formulations[2].
Polyquaternium-51 supports manufacturing blood dialysis membranes, coating biological scaffolds, forming polymer micelles, reducing non-specific adsorption on biomedical chips, coating artificial joints and blood vessels, and use as soft contact lens material or cosmetic moisturizing ingredient[1][2].
