Oxidized LDL

This entry represents the oxidized-LDL receptor activity of the C-type lectin receptor family, best exemplified by lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1. Native LDL becomes immunogenic and pro-inflammatory after oxidative modification in the arterial wall, and lectin-type receptors on endothelial cells and macrophages recognize the altered apoB-100 and oxidized phospholipids to mediate its internalization. Sustained uptake converts macrophages into foam cells, the hallmark of early atherosclerotic lesions, and links dyslipidemia to vascular inflammation. Recombinant oxidized-LDL-binding lectin receptors are used in ligand-binding assays, foam-cell models, and studies connecting lipid oxidation, endothelial dysfunction, and plaque development.
