Beyond its enzymatic roles, ACE2 assumes importance in amino acid transport, acting as a binding partner for the amino acid transporter SLC6A19 in the intestine, where it regulates trafficking, surface expression, and catalytic activity. In the context of microbial infection, ACE2 serves as a receptor for the human coronavirus SARS.
