Sodium butane-1-sulfonate (Sodium 1-butanesulfonate) is an ion-pair reagent. Sodium butane-1-sulfonate is often used in combination with tetramethylammonium hydroxide, malonic acid, etc. in reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography, and can improve the separation efficiency of species of elements such as arsenic and selenium.

Biological Activity
Sodium butane-1-sulfonate enables single-injection separation of 8 common oxygen-containing arsenic species and 3 sulfur-containing arsenic species via ion-pair HPLC-ICP-MS, with all target species exhibiting acceptable resolution[1].
Sodium 1-butanesulfonate enables the separation of seven selenium compounds (Se (VI), Se (IV), TMSe+, SeCys, SeMet, Seet, SeCM) within 12 min via ion-pair reversed-phase chromatography. Among these compounds, the retention behavior of selenoamino acids is pH-dependent, while that of inorganic selenium species is not[2].
