Biological Activity
Tau protein function: A microtubule-associated protein that stabilizes neuronal microtubules and regulates axonal transport; upon abnormal hyperphosphorylation, it dissociates and aggregates into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), driving neurodegeneration.
Residues 592–597 (PHF6) – Aggregation core: VQIINK is the shortest functional segment mediating Tau homo-oligomerization and amyloid fibrillization; it rapidly forms β-sheet fibrils in vitro, is highly abundant in NFTs within Alzheimer's disease brains, and serves as a specific marker for Tau.
