Versicolorone
Versicolorone is an anthraquinone-type aflatoxin biosynthetic intermediate that serves as a substrate for VHA reductase in the aflatoxin metabolic network and is enzymatically converted to sterigmatocystin acetate, elucidating the aflatoxin biotransformation pathway. Versicolorone can be used in studies on the toxicity and carcinogenic mechanisms associated with aflatoxin contamination.

Versicolorone (25 days) is a novel anthraquinone metabolite isolated from the Aspergillus versicolor strain ATCC 34508[2].
Versicolorone, upon incubation (up to 60 min) with cytosolic fractions of Aspergillus parasiticus NIAH‑26 in the presence of NADPH, is biotransformed into sterigmatocystin acetate, sterigmatocystin, and minor amounts of versicolorol[3].
