Biological Activity
In normal cells, phosphatidylserine (PS) is located on the inner side of the cell membrane; in the early stages of apoptosis, PS everts to the outer side of the cell membrane. Annexin V is a Ca2+-dependent phospholipid-binding protein that specifically binds to PS; therefore, Annexin V is often used as a sensitive indicator for detecting early apoptosis. Annexin V fluoresces after being labeled with a fluorescent group, allowing for the detection of apoptosis using fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry.
