Background

Function
PSMA is a transmembrane protein that anchores to the cell membrane through its transmembrane region and is mainly expressed in prostate epithelial cells but also exists in other tissues. PSMA exhibits glutamate-preferring carboxypeptidase activity that hydrolyzes polyglutamylated folic acid to release folic acid monomers. PSMA mediates the endocytosis on the cell surface. PSMA acts as an angiogenesis marker in cancer cells. PSMA can be used as a diagnostic marker for prostate cancer, and for detection of invasiveness and metastatic ability of the tumor[1].

Expression
Tissue_specificity:It is highly expressed in prostate epithelial cells. It can be detected in the bladder, kidneys, testes, ovaries, fallopian tubes, breasts, adrenal glands, liver, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and brain (protein level) . It can also be detected in the capillary endothelial cells of the small intestine, brain, kidneys, liver, spleen, colon, trachea, spinal cord, and various tumors. It is specifically expressed in the brush border membrane of the jejunum. In the brain, it is highly expressed in the ventral striatum and brainstem. It is also expressed in fetal liver and kidneys. The PSMA' subtype is the most abundant subtype in normal prostate. The PSMA-1 subtype is the most abundant subtype in primary prostate tumors. The PSMA-9 subtype is specifically expressed in prostate cancer.
Induction:In the prostate, up-regulated in response to androgen deprivation -
