Background
Function:Has both folate hydrolase and N-acetylated-alpha-linked-acidic dipeptidase (NAALADase) activity. Has a preference for tri-alpha-glutamate peptides. In the intestine, required for the uptake of folate. In the brain, modulates excitatory neurotransmission through the hydrolysis of the neuropeptide, N-aceylaspartylglutamate (NAAG), thereby releasing glutamate. Involved in prostate tumor progression; Also exhibits a dipeptidyl-peptidase IV type activity. In vitro, cleaves Gly-Pro-AMC
Subcellular Localization:Cell membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein; Cytoplasm
Expression:
Tissue_specificity:It is highly expressed in prostate epithelial cells. It can be detected in the bladder, kidneys, testes, ovaries, fallopian tubes, breasts, adrenal glands, liver, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and brain (protein level) . It can also be detected in the capillary endothelial cells of the small intestine, brain, kidneys, liver, spleen, colon, trachea, spinal cord, and various tumors. It is specifically expressed in the brush border membrane of the jejunum. In the brain, it is highly expressed in the ventral striatum and brainstem. It is also expressed in fetal liver and kidneys. The PSMA' subtype is the most abundant subtype in normal prostate. The PSMA-1 subtype is the most abundant subtype in primary prostate tumors. The PSMA-9 subtype is specifically expressed in prostate cancer.

Induction:In the prostate, up-regulated in response to androgen deprivation
Isoforms & Post-Translational Modification:Q04609 has 8 isomers: Q04609-1: 84331 Da (predicted); Q04609-3: 78065 Da (predicted); Q04609-4: 27811 Da (predicted); Q04609-6: 78000 Da (predicted); Q04609-7: 82519 Da (predicted); Q04609-8: 80597 Da (predicted); Q04609-9: 78785 Da (predicted); Q04609-10: 50090 Da (predicted).
The first two amino acids at the N-terminus of isoform PSMA' appear to be cleaved by limited proteolysis; The N-terminus is blocked
Subunit:Homodimer

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
