Benzoflavine
Benzoflavine is an acridine dye and photodynamic sensitizer that regulates embryonic development. Benzoflavine can adsorb to the surface of Arbacia sea urchin egg cell membranes, enhance the sensitivity of highly physiologically active embryonic regions to visible light radiation, and induce anterior-posterior developmental differences; at high concentrations, it can independently inhibit embryonic development without illumination, and its photosensitive response range covers the blue-violet region of visible light. Benzoflavine can be used in research fields such as developmental biology, organic synthesis, and photobiochemistry.

Biological Activity
Benzoflavine (in dilute seawater solution; gradient visible light irradiation) adsorbs to the cell membrane surface of fertilized Arbacia punctulata sea urchin eggs, inducing a photosensitizing effect of embryonic tissues to visible light radiation. Light treatment of this system induces four types of developmental phenotypes in Arbacia pluteus larvae, including irreversible differentiation inhibition, differentiation recovery after transient inhibition, complete overall tissue recovery, and tissue compensatory adaptation[1].
Benzoflavine (dilute seawater solution; continuous exposure to diffuse sunlight) induces differential adaptation and hyperplasia of the anterior median embryonic tissue in Arbacia larvae[1].
Benzoflavine (high-concentration seawater solution; incubated in the dark) inhibits the development of oral lobes and aboral arms in Arbacia embryos, resulting in a differential developmental inhibition effect[1].
