DL-Allylglycine (2-Aminopent-4-enoic acid) is a glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) inhibitor. DL-Allylglycine significantly increases mouse brain ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and decreases S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (SAM-DC) activity. DL-Allylglycine causes a marked decrease in brain GABA concentration. DL-Allylglycine has convulsant activity that can be used in studies to induce epileptic seizures.

Biological Activity
Glutamate Decarboxylase (GAD)[1]
DL-Allylglycine (30-40 mg/kg, i.v., once) induces stable photosensitivity with photically induced seizures in lateral geniculate body (GL)-kindled cats[2].

Result:Achieved a increase in mouse brain ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, and a reduction in S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (SAM-DC) activity.
Showed no significant changes in mouse liver ODC activity, but achieved a reduction in liver SAM-DC activity.
Induced a slight initial drop in mouse brain putrescine concentration.
Inhibited mouse brain glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) activity.
Lowered mouse rectal temperature (Trec).

Induced spontaneous myoclonic movements with paroxysmal discharges.
Led to tachypnea and slight heart rate increase immediately.
