Glutaminase (GLS) is a metabolic enzyme. Glutaminase catalyzes the conversion of glutamine to glutamate, which is a key step in glutaminolysis. The glutaminase isoenzymes GLS and GLS2 differ in their expression patterns and functional roles: GLS exhibits oncogenic properties, whereas GLS2 is regarded as a tumor suppressor. Glutaminase expression levels correlate with the degree of tumor malignancy.
