Metoserpate hydrochloride
Metoserpate hydrochloride is a reserpine-type sedative for poultry. Metoserpate hydrochloride reduces fear-related tonic immobility responses in chicks, inhibits neonatal imprinting approach behavior in an age-dependent manner, and controls hysteria in pullet flocks after administration via drinking water. Metoserpate hydrochloride can be used in studies related to avian fear, stress, imprinting learning and behavioral regulation.

Biologische Aktivität
Metoserpate hydrochloride (4 mg/kg; administered via drinking water) exerts significant sedative effects approximately 2 h after the initial administration, characterized by reduced activity and drowsiness. The observable sedative effects resolve within 24 h, and no obvious adverse reactions are reported[2].
Metoserpate hydrochloride (2 mg/kg; subcutaneous injection; single administration 1 h prior to acquisition training) reduces the initiation and running speeds of White Leghorn chicks treated within the first 48 h post-hatch during imprinting acquisition, and this behavioral inhibitory effect remains detectable in drug-free tests at 144 h of age[4].
Metoserpate hydrochloride reduces the susceptibility of young chickens to tonic immobility and dose-dependently shortens the duration of immobility, with the immobility duration of the control group being more than 3 times that of the optimal dose group[3].
The acute oral LD50 of Metoserpate hydrochloride is 100 mg/kg in both red-winged blackbirds and starlings. In red-winged blackbirds, its R50 is 0.153%, corresponding to 11.8 mg/kg, with a hazard factor of 0.118[1].
