Background

Function
Neuroligin 1 is a Cell surface protein involved in cell-cell-interactions via its interactions with neurexin family members. Plays a role in synapse function and synaptic signal transmission, and probably mediates its effects by recruiting and clustering other synaptic proteins. May promote the initial formation of synapses, but is not essential for this. In vitro, triggers the de novo formation of presynaptic structures. May be involved in specification of excitatory synapses. Required to maintain wakefulness quality and normal synchrony of cerebral cortex activity during wakefulness and sleep (By similarity). The protein is involved in nervous system development

Subcellular Localization
Cell membrane; Postsynaptic density; Synaptic cleft; Synaptic cell membrane; Cell projection, dendrite; Synapse
-
Expression
Tissue_Specificity: Expressed in the blood vessel walls (at protein level). Highly expressed in brain through prenatal stages, and at lower levels in pancreas islet beta cells. -
Isoforms & Post-Translational Modification
Neuroligin 1 has 2 isoforms, Q8N2Q7-3: amino acid length is 863, molecular weight is 96368 Da (predicted); Q8N2Q7-2: amino acid length is 823, molecular weight is 92000 Da (predicted).
N-glycosylated, contains high-mannose, hybrid, complex and sialylated N-glycans. N-glycosylation is essential for localization to synapses, dendrites, and the cell membrane, and enhances its availability for trans-synaptic adhesion. O-glycosylated. -
Subunit
Interacts with neurexins NRXN1, NRXN2 and NRXN3 (By similarity).
