Description

Heptyl butyrate is a pheromone and is an attractant for many wasp species. Heptyl butyrate elicits hovering and landing behavior in Vespula germanica wasps. Heptyl butyrate enhances attraction when applied to protein baits, increasing Vespula germanica wasps’ likelihood of landing on baits.Heptyl butyrate can be used for the research of invasive Vespula germanica wasp population management[1].

In Vivo

Heptyl butyrate (pure or 0.00172-17.2 µg/mL in ethanol, 0.1 mL each; volatile exposure) shows that pure is significantly more attractive to foraging V. germanica worker wasps than diluted concentrations, eliciting a mean of 31.5 hovering events and 6.5 landings per 10-minute field experiment[1].
Heptyl butyrate (100 µL; volatile exposure; ambient field deployment) significantly enhances the attractiveness of protein baits to foraging V. germanica worker wasps, reducing time to first landing and increasing the number of landing wasps compared to untreated baits[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: V. germanica worker wasps[1]
Dosage: Pure heptyl butyrate (0.1 mL); 17.2 µg/mL; 0.172 µg/mL; 0.0172 µg/mL; 0.00172 µg/mL (each 0.1 mL in ethanol)
Administration: volatile exposure
Result: Elicited a mean of 31.5 hovering events and 6.5 landings per 10-minute experiment.
Attracted significantly fewer wasps in ethanol-diluted concentrations (17.2, 0.172, 0.0172, 0.00172 µg/mL) than pure form.
Showed no significant differences in wasp response among diluted concentrations.
Animal Model: V. germanica worker wasps[1]
Dosage: 100 µL
Administration: volatile exposure
Result: Increased the number of landing wasps on treated baits compared to untreated baits in choice assay and no-choice assay.
Reduced mean time to first wasp landing to 34.33 s on treated baits, compared to 87.5 s on untreated baits.
Attracted no non-target insect species.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
