Biological Activity
SOD1 is a copper- and zinc-dependent superoxide dismutase primarily localized in the cytoplasm; it scavenges superoxide anion radicals and maintains cellular redox homeostasis, and mutations in its gene are a major cause of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
