  3. Insulin (swine)

Insulin (swine) is an orally active insulin derived from pigs. Insulin (swine) when administered orally acts as an antigen to reduce the severity of pancreatic lymphocyte infiltration, but has no metabolic effect on blood glucose levels. Insulin (swine) increases glucose oxidation, stimulates lipogenesis, and lowers blood glucose levels. Insulin (swine) can be used in diabetes research.

Description

Insulin (swine) is an orally active insulin derived from pigs. Insulin (swine) when administered orally acts as an antigen to reduce the severity of pancreatic lymphocyte infiltration, but has no metabolic effect on blood glucose levels. Insulin (swine) increases glucose oxidation, stimulates lipogenesis, and lowers blood glucose levels. Insulin (swine) can be used in diabetes research[1][2][3].

In Vitro

Insulin swine (2 h) causes a concentration-dependent increase in glucose oxidation in swine adipose tissue[1].
Insulin swine (1-1000 ng/mL; 2 h) significantly stimulates lipogenesis in the adipose tissue of80-kg pigs, but does not affect glycerol release[1].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

In Vivo

Insulin swine (1 mg; p.o.; twice a week for 5 weeks and then weekly until 1 year of age) delays the onset and reduces the incidence of diabetes in nonobese diabetic mice[2].
Insulin swine (0.16 U/kg; i.v.) reduces blood glucose levels in diabetic Lewis rats[3].

MedChemExpress (MCE) has not independently confirmed the accuracy of these methods. They are for reference only.

Animal Model: Nonobese diabetic mice[2]
Dosage: 1 mg
Administration: Oral gavage (p.o.); twice a week for 5 weeks and then weekly until 1 year of age
Result: Had no metabolic effect on blood glucose levels.
Reduced the severity of lymphocytic infiltration of pancreatic islets.
Generated active cellular mechanisms that suppress disease.
Affected diabetes and the pancreatic cellular inflammatory process.

Help & FAQs
  • Do most proteins show cross-species activity?

Species cross-reactivity must be investigated individually for each product. Many human cytokines will produce a nice response in mouse cell lines, and many mouse proteins will show activity on human cells. Other proteins may have a lower specific activity when used in the opposite species.
